Five 40 Roller Girls – Fredericksburg, VA

Lovely ladies galore! I’ll be the first to admit I know nothing of Roller Derby. I know that I’ve always had friends who played in the league, but I never got out there to find out what it was really about. I’ve been to a few games on and off for sponsorships, but never had the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes. It wasn’t for lack of interest because Roller Derby has always been something I wanted to get involved with! Well, the Five 40 Roller Girls gave me the opportunity when they invited me to a practise while we got our head shots on.

A chance to photograph lovely ladies who know how to get down with their bad selves? Woo!

Practise was a lot of fun to sit through. Even being a fly on the wall I was able to decipher a lot of the rules of the game I hadn’t previously been able to. There’s lots of determination and drive behind this fairly new team and I have no doubt that with lots of practise and exposure they will be a force in the league.

I witnessed quite a few bumps and spills and a lot of cheering on from team members. Not to mention – how can you not love the outfits! I am excited to be able to work further with the team and venture to several upcoming bouts. Their website is still under construction, but if you want to go to a game or say hello! to the team you can find them on Facebook!
